Our Story

Established by Dr. Douglas R. Piteau in 1976, our company began as a small group of engineers providing geotechnical consulting engineering services to the mining, transportation and utility sectors from a single, small office in West Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1977, the company expanded to include hydrogeological expertise needed to support our mining geotechnical projects, and to offer consulting services in the groundwater supply sector.

In response to increasing demand for our services and our involvement in several major mine feasibility studies and operating mines in South America, Piteau Associates Latin America S.A.C. (now Piteau Associates Perú) was established in Peru in 1999. In 2011 Piteau Associates Chile SpA was established in Chile to support continued growth and to formalize the Company’s longstanding commitment to the mining industry in Chile.

A Piteau Associates branch office was opened in Kelowna, BC, Canada in 2012 to provide groundwater resource consulting services throughout the BC Interior, and in 2013 Piteau Associates USA Ltd. was established in Reno, Nevada to better serve our US mining clients.

In concert with our recent addition of several experienced and internationally respected experts in hydrogeology, hydrology, and geochemistry, in late 2016 Piteau Associates formed a multi-disciplinary Water Management Group, and we have now expanded our geographic footprint with new offices in the US (Denver, Tucson, and Elko), South Africa (Johannesburg), and England (Shrewsbury).

Piteau Associates has added value to more than 2000 projects from Alaska to Tasmania, and from Chile to China, and we continue to expand both our scope of services and our geographic footprint to support our Clients’ projects around the world.

Our areas of specialized practice have expanded to include rock mechanics, soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, hydrology, hydrogeochemistry, engineering geology, structural geology, photogrammetry, terrain mapping, GIS modeling and environmental engineering. Typical projects that we undertake include open-pit slope design, slope depressurization programs, mine water management studies, waste dumps, ARD management, underground openings, plant site foundations, landslides and geological hazards, route and site selection, roads and pipelines, sedimentation and retention ponds, acid rock drainage, mine closure planning, groundwater supply and contaminated sites. We also conduct audits and 3rd Party reviews, and participate on numerous Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Review Boards.
