Piteau Associates was founded in 1976 by Dr. Douglas R. Piteau, P.Eng.  Under the name D.R. Piteau & Associates Ltd., the company provided geotechnical consulting engineering services to the mining, transportation and utility sectors from an office in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.  Having pioneered a number of data collection, analysis and design methods used in modern rock mechanics, Dr. Piteau was widely recognized as a leading expert in the field, which led to many exciting opportunities throughout the Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa, and Australia.

In the late 1970s, the company expanded to include hydrogeological expertise needed to support geotechnical projects.  The addition of these capabilities led to a wide-range of opportunities in other sectors, including groundwater supply assessment and development, landfills, dam seepage, and construction dewatering.

After the death of Dr. Piteau in 1984, the Company’s name was changed to Piteau Associates Engineering Ltd., and Dr. Dennis Martin, P.Eng. was appointed President.  Under the leadership of Dr. Martin and Messrs. Alan Stewart, P.Eng./P.Geo. and Allan Dakin, P.Eng., the Company continued to provide geotechnical and hydrogeological consulting services and expanded in response to a growing number of opportunities worldwide.  In the 1990s, the firm established a forestry geotechnical group and became involved in the emerging contaminated sites sector in British Columbia.  Dr. Martin passed away in 1998 and was succeeded by Mr. Alan Stewart.

In response to ongoing high demand for geotechnical engineering and hydrogeology services on several major mine feasibility studies and operating mines, Piteau Engineering Latin America S.A.C. was established in Peru in 2000 under the direction of Mr. Mark Hawley, P.Eng./P.Geo. In 2009, Mr. Hawley was appointed President and CEO.  In 2011, Piteau Associates Chile SpA was established in Santiago, Chile to support continued growth and to formalize the Company’s longstanding commitment to Chile and South America.

A Piteau Associates branch office was opened Kelowna, BC, Canada in 2012 to provide hydrogeology consulting services throughout the BC Interior.
